Because basketball wasn't popular in japan before the comic was published. The comic is loved not only by Japanese, but the nations of the world. Of course, I love it best!!
Its heroes are "Syohoku(=翔北) high school basketball team", and the coach is "Anzai(=安西)". He looks just like Mr.Kernel of KFC!! The character is so charming and kind, but secretly really strict like a devil! But actually there's a rumor that the model is a former basketball's coach in Kumamoto Kokufu high school!! I don't know who started such a rumor, but it's a well-known story.
The cartoonist is from Kagoshima, battle, and I think so, too. So I guess that he saw the coach when a basketball much was held, it seems. They say that Kumamoto is a area where is the site of a hard fought basketball Kumamoto, there are more many models who are basketball player in this comic. I hope so.
